Plastic blow moulding is a manufacturing process by which hollow plastic parts are formed.
Plastic blow moulding is used for the production of hollow objects in large quantities.
Obvious applications are bottles and similar containers such as dairy containers, shampoo bottles, hoses/pipes, and hollow industrial parts such as drums.
Reasons for plastic blow moulding include:
|
| |
- Plastic blow moulding cost per part is extremly low.
- High volume component production is very economical.
- Very good for hollow parts.
- Plastic blow moulding has a very low tool and die cost.
- Extremly rapid production rates.
- Ability to mould complex parts
- Blow moulding can produce recyclable parts

Plastic blow moulding process:
|
| |
The plastic blow moulding process begins with melting down the plastic and forming it into a preform.
The preform is a tube-like piece of plastic with a hole in one end in which compressed air can pass through.
The preform is then clamped into a mould and air is pumped into it. The air pressure then pushes the plastic out to match the mould.
Once the plastic has cooled and hardened the mould opens up and the part is ejected.
In general, there are three main types of plastic blow moulding: extrusion blow moulding, injection blow moulding, and stretch blow moulding.
